Coolamon Lactose Free Soft Blue: Review
Approachable creamy blue cheese that happens to be lactose free. Coolamon Lactose Free Soft Blue ticks a few boxes, being both lactose-free and vegetarian-friendly. Made from pasteurised cows milk.
It’s even softer than a St. Agur cheese or Tarago Shadows of Blue. And is it not the full-frontal assault you get from a Roquefort, Gorgonzola, or vintage Stilton. In the mouth is has thick, soft creamy feeling. The main flavour elements from blue cheeses are there…herbal/vegetal and mineral – in a mild way, and with the salt and acidity dialled well back. This soft blue is an approachable vegetarian-friendly creamy blue made from pasteurised cow’s milk that deserves interest and a wider audience, not just from the lactose intolerant, but also as one of those cheeses you might serve to somebody to gently introduce them to blue cheese, or just want some comfort food.
The chemist-nerd in me I was left wondering how the makers have made this cheese lactose-free? Soft cheeses contain more why than hard cheeses, and it is the whey that contains the lactose. I wonder.

Wine Matching | Wine Pairing
Needs a full bodied red wine, preferably with some sweetness to counter the saltiness of the cheese. A port or sticky wine is ideal. Or see my cheese and wine pairing guide for more options.
